Tip a load of driveway gravel onto a tarp in a Finger Lakes yard in April and the pile tells you most of what you need to know before you spread a shovelful. Nothing in it is round. The faces are freshly broken, the biggest pieces are about three quarters of an inch across, and between them sit chips, grit and a scatter of fines that were never washed out. Push your boot into the side of the pile and it resists instead of sliding, which is exactly the behavior you want from a surface that has to hold a car through a thaw.

Reading the grading before you spread a shovelful

Three specifications carry this material, and all three matter on the ground. The size is three quarters of an inch. The grading is a mix of stone sizes rather than a single screened grade. The type is crushed stone, so every piece has broken faces and corners.

The graded mix is the part buyers skip past. A single-size stone such as #57 Stone has gaps all the way through it and stays loose underfoot forever. A graded mix has small pieces that drop into the spaces between big ones, so traffic drives the layer tighter instead of pushing it apart. That is why a gravel drive crunches and firms up over the first few weeks rather than rutting further.

For weight, this site's calculator pages put crushed gravel at roughly 2,800 pounds per cubic yard, which is about 1.40 tons per yard. Treat that as an approximate working figure; damp material off the top of a pile after rain runs heavier than the same stone in August.

Three jobs on one delivery: soaking pad, side-yard run and parking loop

The same graded mix covers a wide spread of jobs at different thicknesses. Depths below are for the gravel layer only, sitting on ground that has already been prepared.

JobGravel depthWhat it needs underneath
Hot tub or soaking pad4 in, screeded levelA compacted base layer, not bare soil
Side-yard dog run3 inFabric over soft upland till
Turnaround or parking pad4 in6 in or more of compacted base
Topping up a tired drive2 inThe existing surface, raked and crowned

A dog run is the one job on that list where the stone sits close to the surface with little beneath it, and it is also the job where owners regret going too deep. Three inches is enough to keep paws out of mud and shallow enough that a rake will pull it back into shape after a dog has spent a summer digging in the same corner.

Frost at four feet, and what sits under driveway gravel

New York ground moves. Frost runs to roughly four feet in most of the state, with the local building department setting the figure that matters for footings, and the cycle of freezing and thawing repeats hard upstate all winter. Under the snow belts east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, a heavy pack melts out over a few weeks in spring and leaves flat lake-bed clay holding water at the surface. In the Hudson and Mohawk valleys, silt and clay left by old glacial lakes heave more than the stony till on the hills above them.

None of that is a reason to order deeper gravel. It is a reason to order a base. Driveway gravel is a surface course. The load-carrying work belongs to a compacted layer of Item 4 or crusher run underneath it, and on slow-draining clay a separation fabric under that base keeps the two from mixing.

Long Island and the outer boroughs sit on sandy glacial outwash that takes rain in quickly, so a drive there often carries less base than the same drive would on a Southern Tier hillside. Winters are milder near the coast, but the ground still freezes and thaws every year and a thin base still shows it.

Crown the surface so water runs off sideways instead of sitting in the wheel tracks. A drive that sheds water loses far less stone over a winter than one that ponds.

Counting tons for a 20 by 22 turnaround and a 44 foot dog run

Hypothetical figures, used here to show the arithmetic. Three areas, one delivery.

Turnaround or parking pad, 20 by 22 ft, 4 in of gravel

  • 20 x 22 = 440 sq ft
  • 440 x 4 / 12 = 146.7 cu ft
  • 146.7 / 27 = 5.43 cu yd

Side-yard dog run, 5 by 44 ft, 3 in

  • 5 x 44 = 220 sq ft
  • 220 x 3 / 12 = 55 cu ft
  • 55 / 27 = 2.04 cu yd

Hot tub pad, 9 by 9 ft, 4 in

  • 9 x 9 = 81 sq ft
  • 81 x 4 / 12 = 27 cu ft
  • 27 / 27 = 1.0 cu yd

Add them: 5.43 + 2.04 + 1.0 = 8.47 cubic yards. At about 1.40 tons per cubic yard that is 11.9 tons, so 12 is the round figure to order. The gravel calculator takes several areas in one pass if your layout has more shapes than these three, and it converts to tons for you.

Getting a tandem to the back of a Southern Tier lot

Delivery is arranged at checkout by your ZIP code, and the driver needs a clear route in and a firm spot to tip. That is worth a walk around the property before you book. Check the turning room at the top of the drive, the branches over the entrance, and whether the ground you are asking a loaded truck to cross has dried out yet. In spring, upland ground that looks solid at eight in the morning can be soft by noon.

Pick the dump spot with the shovel work in mind. A pile dropped uphill of the drive is easier to move than one dropped at the bottom. Mark it with a cone or a stake so the driver is not guessing, and keep cars, trailers and the hose reel out of the swing.

When your number is settled, set the tonnage and a delivery date on the product page, or send the dimensions through the contact form if you would rather have the quantity checked first.
