Walkway gravel is one of the few materials in New York with two honest seasons for laying it. Spring, once the frost has left and the ground has drained enough to hold a shape, is when most paths get cut. Late summer into early autumn is the better window on the wet ground of the Southern Tier and the lake plains, when the soil has finally dried out and the path can be edged and settled before the first plow of the winter comes past. What you want to avoid is building on ground that is still thawing, because a path shaped in March mud will be a different shape in May.

Walkway Gravel is 3/8 inch crushed stone in a graded mix of sizes. Crushed, not rounded, which is the whole reason it works underfoot.

Walkway Gravel next to pea gravel, stone dust and driveway gravel

MaterialShape and sizeWhat it does on a path
Walkway Gravel3/8 in crushed, graded mixKnits together, stays put, drains
3/8" Natural Pea Gravel3/8 in roundedRolls underfoot and migrates, softer to look at
Stone DustFine screeningPacks to a hard, smooth surface, sheds water rather than passing it
Driveway GravelCoarser surfacing stoneBuilt for tires; too coarse and loose for comfortable walking

The comparison that decides most orders is the first two. Pea gravel and walkway gravel are the same nominal size, and in a photograph they are hard to tell apart. In use they are nothing alike. Rounded stone has no way to lock to its neighbors, so it rolls under a heel, spreads sideways and ends up in the lawn. Crushed stone in a graded mix has flat faces and a range of sizes, so the small pieces wedge between the large ones and the surface knits. On the fine end, stone dust packs harder still, but it sheds water across the surface rather than letting it through, so a stone dust path on flat clay ground stays wet.

Where a 3/8 inch crushed path earns its keep, and three jobs it cannot take

Garden paths through planting, front and side yard walks, the filling between flagstone or concrete steppers, and a border strip around a patio are all its natural work. It shapes around curves, it can be lifted and re-laid if the garden changes, and water passes through it rather than freezing into a sheet on top.

Three jobs it should not be ordered for, all of which come up:

Retaining wall backfill. The drainage zone against the back of a wall wants clean washed stone with no fines, so water can leave. Walkway gravel carries a graded mix and will not drain as freely. Use #57 Stone behind the wall. The 3 foot walk along the top of the wall is where this gravel belongs.

A pond or shoreline edge. Any edge that takes waves, ice or a rising water level needs stone heavy enough to stay where it is put, which means rip rap. A 3/8 inch stone placed at a water's edge is gone after the first hard blow. The loop path set back from the water is a different matter.

A construction entrance. The point of an entrance is to shed mud off tires and take equipment weight, which wants heavy stone such as #4 Crushed Stone over fabric. Walkway gravel is what goes down on the garden paths afterwards, once the machines have gone.

Depth for a path that has to survive a snow shovel

Two to three inches of gravel over a firm, cleared subgrade is the usual build, with landscape fabric between the two. Take the sod off rather than laying over it, and cut the trench to the full depth so the finished path sits level with the lawn instead of proud of it. A path standing above the surrounding grade sheds its stone in every direction.

Edging does more work than depth. Steel, aluminum, timber or a set stone edge holds the gravel against a winter of shoveling, plow spray and freeze-thaw lifting the surface. Without it, upstate especially, a path loses its outline within two seasons.

Where a path crosses a slope, break the run into short level stretches with a low step or a timber riser between them, rather than letting one long gradient act as a chute for gravel and runoff. On the sandy outwash of Long Island the subgrade drains on its own; on the dense upland subsoils of the Catskills and the Southern Tier, give the path a slight crown so water leaves the surface as well as passing through it.

Sizing a pond loop, a wall-top walk and a reclaimed entrance track

Illustrations with invented dimensions.

Loop path set back from a pond, 60 ft long, 3 ft wide, 3 in deep

  • 60 x 3 = 180 sq ft
  • 180 x 3 / 12 = 45 cu ft
  • 45 / 27 = 1.7 cu yd

Walk along the top of a 20 ft retaining wall, 3 ft wide, 3 in deep

  • 20 x 3 = 60 sq ft
  • 60 x 3 / 12 = 15 cu ft
  • 15 / 27 = 0.6 cu yd

For comparison, the drainage zone behind that same wall, 1 ft wide and 4 ft high over 20 ft, is 20 x 1 x 4 = 80 cu ft, or 3.0 cubic yards of washed stone. The path on top takes a fifth of what the wall itself needs.

Old construction entrance turned into a path, 40 by 4 ft, 3 in deep

  • 40 x 4 = 160 sq ft
  • 160 x 3 / 12 = 40 cu ft
  • 40 / 27 = 1.5 cu yd

The three path areas come to 3.8 cubic yards, and this site publishes walkway gravel at roughly 2,800 pounds per cubic yard, about 1.40 tons per yard, so 3.8 x 1.40 is approximately 5.3 tons on an approximate weight. Put the same measurements into the gravel calculator to convert cubic yards into the tonnage the product page orders by. It handles up to five separate areas in one go, which suits a path that changes width partway along.

Setting the quantity and choosing the drop spot

Order the fabric and the edging before the gravel, so the path is ready to fill on the day. Pick a tip spot on firm ground with a clear wheelbarrow route, ideally at the midpoint of a long path rather than at one end. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, and the truck needs room to turn and a solid surface to dump on.

Set the amount and a delivery date on the Walkway Gravel page. If the path is part of a larger job and you would rather have the quantities checked before booking, New York Rock Supply takes the measurements through the contact page.
