River rock beds go in at the two ends of the New York season. Spring, once the snow is off and before the beds fill in, is when most of them happen, and early autumn is the quieter second window, after the heat and before the ground is frozen and the plow is out. Unlike base work, a stone bed can be laid on ground that is a little damp, so the constraint is less about the thaw and more about getting it done before a bed is either overgrown or buried under snow.

Everything on the page follows from those three lines. Rounded means the stones do not interlock, so they roll, spread and travel downhill unless something holds them. The 1 to 3 inch size is large enough to stay put under a garden hose and a rake but small enough to move with a shovel. The color range is natural variation rather than a dye, so a bed laid this year and topped up in three years will blend rather than patch.
A related point people ask about before they order: wet stone looks considerably darker and richer than dry stone. The bed you see the day it is hosed down is the saturated version. Dry, it lightens back, and over a few seasons a thin dust and pollen film takes some of the sheen off until it is rinsed.
Hot tub surround, dog run and turnaround: where rounded stone fits
| Job | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hot tub apron or surround | Works well | Drains splash-out, rinses clean, stays put around a fixed structure |
| Side-yard dog run | Works well | No mud, hoses down, no organic material to hold odor |
| Foundation and downspout beds | Works well | Takes roof splash without washing out the way mulch does |
| Dry creek detail | Works well | The visible material in an open drainage route |
| Turnaround or parking pad | Wrong pick | Rounded stone ruts, migrates and works into the lawn under tires |
| Under pavers or a slab | Wrong pick | Will not compact; a base needs fines or angular faces |
The turnaround is the one worth laboring. Rounded stone under a wheel behaves like a bearing: it rolls out from under the tire, builds a ridge at the edge and leaves a hollow in the track. A pad or a turnaround wants driveway gravel over a compacted base instead. If the appeal is the look, put the stone in the beds beside the pad and keep it out of the driving surface.
For a dog run, a shallow layer over fabric is enough. The rounded shape is easier on paws than a crushed stone would be, and the open gaps let urine flush through rather than sit.
Most beds that get stone were mulched before. Shredded mulch feeds the soil and has to be renewed; stone does not feed anything and stays. Where people walk without shoes, a finer rounded stone such as 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is the kinder option, and it is worth comparing finishes across the decorative range before you commit a whole front bed to one of them.
River rock on Long Island sand, valley clay and Adirondack ledge
Ground type changes what happens under the bed more than what happens in it. On Long Island's sandy outwash, water drops straight through and the risk is sand working up into the stone over time, which fabric underneath will slow. On the glacial-lake silts and clays of the Hudson and Mohawk valleys and the lake plains, water arrives faster than it drains, and stone sitting on saturated clay presses in until half of it is buried. That is where a fabric layer does its most useful work.
In the Adirondacks and across the stony till upstate, thin soil over hard bedrock sheds rain quickly, and the practical problem is stone traveling on a slope during a heavy runoff event rather than sinking.
Freeze and thaw is the other yearly factor and it applies everywhere, mildest on Long Island and in New York City, hardest in the North Country and the St. Lawrence and Champlain valleys. Each cycle lifts the surface a little, which is why a bed laid tight to a lawn edge in spring has stone in the grass by the following one. Edging solves it.
Working out a dog run and a hot tub apron
Illustrations with invented dimensions.
Side-yard dog run, 6 by 24 ft, 2 in deep over fabric
- 6 x 24 = 144 sq ft
- 144 x 2 / 12 = 24 cu ft
- 24 / 27 = 0.9 cu yd
Hot tub apron, a 2 ft border around an 8 by 8 ft tub, 2 in deep
- Outer footprint 12 x 12 = 144 sq ft
- Less the tub, 8 x 8 = 64 sq ft
- 144 - 64 = 80 sq ft of stone
- 80 x 2 / 12 = 13.3 cu ft
- 13.3 / 27 = 0.5 cu yd
Foundation bed, 3 ft wide along 44 ft of wall, 2 in deep
- 3 x 44 = 132 sq ft
- 132 x 2 / 12 = 22 cu ft
- 22 / 27 = 0.8 cu yd
Just over 2 cubic yards in total, 2.2 across the three. This site publishes river rock at roughly 2,700 pounds per cubic yard, about 1.35 tons per yard, so 2.2 x 1.35 is approximately 3.0 tons, and that weight is an approximate working figure. Decorative stone is not compacted, so there is no compaction allowance, but order a little spare for topping up. To convert cubic yards into the tonnage the product page sells by, use the river rock calculator.
Clearing a drop spot before the load lands
Rounded stone rolls, which makes the dump spot a decision rather than an afterthought. Lay tarps, pick level ground, and keep the pile off a slope and away from a storm drain. Have the beds cut, edged and fabricked before the delivery date so the stone is handled once.
Set the quantity and a delivery date on the River Rock page and confirm the ZIP at checkout. Where a bed runs bigger than the wheelbarrow route can comfortably serve, say so through the contact page first, because a drop spot fifty feet closer is worth more than any trick with a shovel. For heavier decorative and erosion work, Large River Rock is the same material a size up.
