Minimal organic matter

Fill work is governed by moisture more than by the calendar. The frost may be out of the ground in the Finger Lakes by early April, but the silty till on a hillside is still holding water from the melt, and dirt placed into that will not compact no matter how many passes it gets. The usable stretch on most upstate sites opens once the ground has drained down and dried, and it closes when the November rain arrives or the surface starts freezing overnight. Fill Dirt is ordered inside that window: screened to take out the large rocks, roots and debris, with little organic matter in it, which is what lets it pack and stay put.

On Long Island and around New York City the window is longer because the coastal winters are milder and the sandy ground sheds water quickly. Even there, a wet stretch after a nor'easter stops compaction for a week.

Why a dirt load waits for the ground to dry, not just for the frost to leave

Compaction is the whole purpose of this material, and compaction depends on moisture. Too wet and the lift pumps under the plate or the roller and never reaches density; too dry and the particles will not bind. A handful squeezed into a ball that holds its shape but breaks cleanly when you press it is usually about right.

Valley clay along the Hudson and the Mohawk, and the flat lake-bed silts behind the Great Lakes shorelines, stay wet longest. Thin upland soils in the Adirondacks and on stony till shed water faster and are ready sooner. Watch the ground itself rather than the date.

Stripping the sod and finding the wet line before the first load lands

Before anything is tipped, strip the sod and any dark topsoil off the area and stack it to one side. Fill placed over grass and organic soil settles for years as that layer rots beneath it.

Walk the site and find where water currently goes. Raising a corner without planning the route out simply moves the puddle to a neighbor's side of the line. Decide the finished grade, mark it, and set the fall away from any building before ordering.

Then plan where the pile can sit. A dirt pile on a lawn kills the grass under it in a few days and is far heavier to move twice than to place once.

Fill dirt under a pole barn pad and a one-car drive on Southern Tier ground

For a pole barn or equipment pad cut into a slope, the fill is the shape of the build: brought up in lifts of about 6 inches, each one compacted before the next goes on, with the surface crowned slightly so water leaves. The pad itself is not this material. Once the grade is right, the working surface goes on top, normally compacted Item 4 or crusher run.

For a single-car gravel driveway that sits low and holds water, fill raises the whole run above the surrounding ground so it drains sideways instead of ponding. Again it is the subgrade only: compacted Driveway Gravel over a base makes the surface.

A flagstone walkway is the exception on this list. It needs this material only if the walk line is low or uneven enough to need raising first. Where the grade is already right, the walk is built on a base with a bed of stone dust under the slabs, and a dirt load is not part of the job at all.

Yards and tons for a 26 by 38 pad lift and a low 40 foot drive strip

Worked figures with invented dimensions.

Pole barn pad, 26 by 38 ft, 8 in average lift

  • 26 x 38 = 988 sq ft
  • 988 x 8 / 12 = 658.7 cu ft
  • 658.7 / 27 = 24.4 cu yd

Drive strip, 40 ft by 10 ft, 6 in average fill

  • 40 x 10 = 400 sq ft
  • 400 x 6 / 12 = 200 cu ft
  • 200 / 27 = 7.4 cu yd

That is 31.8 cubic yards together. Weight depends on how wet it is: this site publishes about 2,400 lb per cubic yard dry, near 1.20 tons per yard, and up to 3,000 lb per cubic yard wet, around 1.50 tons. So the same 31.8 yards is roughly 38 tons dry and as much as 48 tons wet, which matters when you are booking loads rather than yards.

Those numbers are the volume in place after compaction. Loose dirt takes up more room in the truck than it does in the ground, so a pad built to a measured depth will want more than the calculated figure. The dirt calculator handles the arithmetic for an area with more than one depth in it.

What the first winter does to a new lift

A fill that was compacted properly moves very little. One that was placed wet, or dumped in a single deep lift, gives up the difference over the first freeze and thaw, usually as a dish in the middle. Leave a new pad through a winter before building on it if the schedule allows, then check the levels in spring and top the low points.

Where grass is meant to grow, the finished contour gets a layer of Top Soil over it. Nothing much roots in fill.

When the quantity is settled, pick it with a delivery date on the Fill Dirt product page. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, and the truck needs firm ground and clear access to reach the tipping spot.
