Materials for Newport Projects

Most jobs here start with a base. Item 4 is the standard New York name for compacting subbase stone, and it goes under driveways, parking pads, patio and shed bases. Spread it, compact it in lifts, and it locks up hard.

Some yards in the state sell crusher run and item 4 as the same kind of material, so ask for whichever name your supplier uses. Both bind and compact, and both work as the base under a drive or slab.

On top of that base, driveway gravel surfaces an existing drive or tops a compacted layer for a finished, drivable surface. For walks and garden paths, walkway gravel gives you a finer surface that stays comfortable underfoot.

Below the surface layer, #2 stone covers drainage, septic beds, pipe bedding and backfill. Stone dust, also called screenings, beds pavers, flagstone and patio work. Mason sand handles brick and block work and paver joints, and washed sand levels and beds under slabs.

Ground and Conditions in Newport

Water drives most of the material decisions here. Spring snowmelt, ice jams and heavy rain from coastal storms raise the Mohawk and its tributaries, and the clay and silt on the valley floors drain slowly and stay wet after a storm. Water that cannot move sideways sits under a drive and works on it.

That is why a driveway here needs a base that compacts and a drainage layer that moves water away. Stony glacial till on the hills and highlands often has ledge rock close to the surface, so a shallow cut can turn into a different job than you planned.

Cold winters bring repeated freezing and thawing, and the silt and clay soils on valley floors are especially prone to frost heave. Frost depth is usually about 4 feet down for footings, and the local building department sets the exact depth. Base and driveway work runs from spring thaw into late fall, because frozen ground stops compaction.

Floodwater scours stream and river banks after heavy rain, snowmelt and ice jams. Riprap armors those banks, culvert outlets and slopes against runoff and ice.

Delivery to Newport and the Surrounding Area

Bulk material arrives by dump truck. Place your order online, choose the quantity by the ton or yard, and use the calculator to size the load before you check out. Then pick a delivery date that matches your schedule.

Have the drop spot clear and reachable before the truck arrives, with room to spread the pile where you want it. A load set on soft spring ground can sink, so firm footing helps.

We deliver across Newport and the rest of Herkimer County, including Ilion, Herkimer, Little Falls, Mohawk and Frankfort.
